Ceramics by JoannaJune 10, 2015

Based in Deia for over thirty five years, local ceramicist and passionate conservationist Joanna has become a well known presence in the village. Here she tell us the story of how she discovered Mallorca and her efforts to preserve the natural beauty of the island.

Joanna graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, specializing in ceramic and glass sculpture, from the University of Illinois. She then set off from the Virgin Islands on a sailboat in search of her idea of the dream island in the mountains and by the sea. After crossing the Atlantic and sailing to virtually all of the islands in the Mediterranean sea, she landed on Mallorca and found her way to Deia, nestled in the mountains and renowned for its international atmosphere and creative forces. The artistic community of encouraging and supportive people with their positive energy appealed to Joanna and kept her in Deia much longer than she anticipated. She has lived here ever since and runs her own ceramic studio-shop. Most of the hotels, cafes and restaurants in Deia display her artwork in one form or another.

Most recently, Joanna strongly feels that Mother Nature is calling on her to protect the land and sea of her island. She has combined her passion for conservation and ceramics together in her newest project: waterfront tiles depicting individuals maintaining the beautiful marine ecosystem of Cala Deia, as well as featuring the exotic aquatic life to be found in the Cala. She hopes this will remind visitors to be considerate of something so precious to the island. Joanna wants to prompt and question the community, “why are we destroying, that which we are enjoying?” Her activism is welcomed and appreciated by those on the island and she hopes it will make a great difference.

Joanna’s little shop is full of beautiful hand- crafted and painted ceramics. It can be found in Deia on Calle Es Porxo No.1. Inside you will find lovely bowls, table lamps, and name plaques for your home. She makes tasteful accessories for modern or rustic homes away from home and also specializes in custom-made ceramic requests. Be sure to check out her eco-art as well.

Hours: Her opening hours depend a bit on the time of year and the time of day so if you are coming from afar, it is best to give her a quick call beforehand on +34-699 52 18 72.
