Hidden Gems # 9 Es Roquissar Bar, ValldemossaJune 30, 2016

I first visited Es Roquissar in Valldemossa in early March on a cool crisp evening. I remember vividly the church lit against the black sky. It was my first experience of Valldemossa by night.

The restaurant is set in a quiet square by the Chopin Museum – nicely set back from the busy tourist trap. I had no expectation of the place, other than my friend saying it served great food but then he is very picky so I guessed I was in for a treat. And a treat it was. Seriously mouth watering food, relaxed atmosphere, ambient, cosy, welcoming and caring staff, an open kitchen – which is always a winner in my view and a beautiful tree growing up through the middle of the bar!

The menu is delicious and not your typical Spanish selection, there were about 5 things to chose from in each course. On that night we had duck spring rolls twice(!), the first just wasn’t enough, not because of size but because it was so tasty, followed by a perfectly cooked steak served with buttery potatoes.I didn’t try the desserts but the table of girlfriends next to us did and I was tempted to spoon some off their plates.

The restaurant is small, you can sit upstairs if you can make it up the narrow spiral stair case, or downstairs in a single line of tables in front of the kitchen/bar area or in the courtyard which is more spacious and perfect if it is a warmer temperature. It is a great option for a date as it is romantic in a subtle and charming way, or a visit with someone you like and don’t mind being in close proximity with for an hour or two. Or, even solo with a book and your own wonderful company.

I’m not sure if they take bookings so worth phoning ahead to check their kitchen hours and to see how busy they are. It’s worth the wait if there is one!
