A must read if thinking about a holiday rental in Mallorca this year.

Now we may be biased, but we believe that the mountainous West Coast is the sure choice to enjoy the holiday of a lifetime on the island of Mallorca. Before you make your villa rental choice it is important to consider the options that are available to you – of which there are an abundance! We strive to be knowledgeable, open and on hand personally, to make booking a holiday rental in Mallorca a breeze.

Decisions decisions – Do you favour sundown drinks on the terrace? A short walk home from the bars in the evening? Or is a secluded sunrise yoga spot essential for you?

Here are what we believe to be your top 5 decisions before choosing your holiday rental:

1. Beach vs. Pool 

For some people you cannot beat the feeling of a fresh dip into the sea. Whereas for others, lying poolside with
a homemade frozen margarita is their idea of paradise.

Whatever your preference is, along the West Coast it is worth noting, the beaches (or Calas) are primarily rocky coves. Natural beauties – although a little less suitable for very young children. There are some great spots
for rock jumping and snorkelling. Also, from Deia you can drive to Port Soller in 20 minutes, which has a large horseshoe shaped sandy beach.

If the budget does not stretch to a pool you are never too far from the sea in Deia – and an outside shower can be just as useful to cool down from a day of sunbathing.

2. Rural Remote Hideaway vs. Central Townhouse

Another key decision. Do you go for a centrally located holiday rental, with restaurants and bars within, shall we say, stumbling distance? Or do you take a villa hidden away amongst the mountains with little more than a few goats and donkeys as neighbours?

Stay a little further out and you are more likely to find a villa with a larger pool however some of the Deia roads are not for the faint hearted. So if you go off the beaten track be sure to rent a small sturdy car and if heading out in the evening get one of the few local taxis on speed dial and we always recommend carrying an emergency torch.

3. Sea Views vs. Mountain Views

Another topic we hear debated a lot. Sea views are both mesmeric and calming.

But we would like to give the Deia mountains a special mention – and a property with a view of the Tramuntana is not to be sniffed at.

They say they have magnetic healing qualities and are a huge part of what makes Deia so unique. If you squint you can make out the “Sleeping Giant” whose face rises from the top of the range. And those who have visited before will tell you they come into their own as the sun sets each day with a light show as they glow from orange to red, then pink to purple.

4. Sun rise vs. Sunset

 Only a handful of houses on the island offer a decent view of both. And with Deia being on the West Coast – it’s all about the sunsets over here.

The villas with these views are in high demand – it’s one of life’s real luxuries to be able to sit in the comfort of your own terrace with a gin & tonic watching the day draw to an end night after night.

However, they are not the only way to take in the setting sun as the West Coast boasts some fabulous viewing points. Those in the know head up to Sa Foradada (a short drive out of Deia towards Valldemossa) for one of the best vantage points. Every Sunday during the summer is live DJs and a real festival vibe. Well worth checking out. Or for a twilight stroll take on the promenade at Port Soller with a local ice cream – you won’t feel like you’re missing out on anything.

5. Dining In vs. Dining Out

Eating. Often the highlight of a holiday, so many happy memories begin round a dining table.
But when on holiday do you eat in or out. The good news is that in Mallorca you are in for treat either way.

Let’s start with eating out and in Deia you really are spoilt for choice. But look out for village delights Nama, Sebastian’s, Xelini, Es Punt and Michelin star Es Raco de Teix.

However, if you’ve invested in a nice place to stay there’s a good reason to really make the most of it. For shopping it’s worth a day trip to a local market – Valldemossa, Soller or Palma – for some of the island’s really fabulous fresh produce. Head down to Port Soller to pick up the famous Soller prawns – which fetch a pretty penny in other parts of the world.

Equally if you don’t fancy doing the dishes on holiday then treat yourself to an in-villa dining experience by hiring a private chef for the evening.
