Paseo de Poetas opens at Belmond La ResidenciaMay 26, 2017

On 23 May the new Paseo de Poetas, or poet’s walk, was officially opened at Belmond La Residencia, the village’s luxury boutique hotel, with a cocktail party attended by local dignatories and personalities from the worlds of literature and art.

The Paseo de Poetas features the profiles of Robert Graves and other distinguished poets, worked in metal adorning circular granite columns. Beside each is a wooden bench where visitors can read or meditate on the inspiring vistas. Juan Waelder, resident sculptor at the hotel, created the profiles and inscribed quotations from each poet on the benches.

Alongside Robert Graves are Miquel Costa i Llobera, a local poet who evoked nature in many of his works, Spanish writers Frederico Garcia Lorca and José Benjamin Gutiérrez and the Chilean Pablo Neruda.

Next year, Belmond La Residencia plans to add women poets.

William Graves, eldest son of Robert and Beryl Graves, attended the event. He is one of the driving forces behind the Fundació de Robert Graves, which maintains the ‘writer’s house’ at Ca’n Alluny – the old Graves family house. La Casa de Robert Graves, overlooked by the new Paseo de Poetas, is well worth a visit.

If you haven’t already read it, William’s Wild Olives: Life in Majorca with Robert Graves is a fascinating and evocative account of growing up in Deia before it was Deia.

A most literary year

Since it opened in 1984, Belmond La Residencia has been strongly supportive of the village’s artistic community. Sa Tafona, its acclaimed art gallery, plays host to exhibitions and performances by local artists throughout the year. The sculpture garden, one of the largest in Spain, features work by internationally known sculptors as well as relative unknowns and brings a uniquely artistic charm to the luxurious hotel setting.

The hotel’s lawn has also done service as a temporary dance floor for musical events, including one especially wild performance by local favourites and island rock and roll legends Pa Amb Oli Band.

This year, however, Belmond La Residencia is celebrating the village’s remarkable literary heritage.

 Shakespeare under the stars

A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be the first play presented outdoors under the stars in Belmond La Residencia’s beautiful garden. It will be performed by Palma’s Morgan Theatre Production Company in the round and accompanied by music. There will be two performances, on 20 and 27 July 2017 at 9 pm.

A memoir writing workshop with Allegra Huston

Between 22 and 27 October, acclaimed memoirist, journalist, editor, screen writer and film producer Allegra Huston will offer a Memoir Writing Workshop at Belmond La Residencia. Allegra has previously given workshops at venues that include the highly respected Arvon Foundation in the UK.

There are, of course, many good reasons to spend time at Belmond La Residencia. It manages to be both luxurious and welcoming, chic and bohemian. Now that the hotel has created the Paseo de Poetas, a tranquil spot from which to gaze out over the breathtaking vistas of Deia and the surrounding landscape while waiting for the muse to grace us with her presence, there’s all the more reason to call in.
