Matthew Williamson and Osborne & Little launch sensational new Deya Collection of wallpapers and fabricsSeptember 20, 2018

Many fine artists have found inspiration in Deya and the surrounding landscape. But, as far as I know, Matthew Williamson is the first to create a range of wallpapers and fabrics. Matthew’s fabulous new Deya Collection, created with Osborne & Little, one of the world’s leading names in fabric and wallpaper design, launches this month.

Matthew has been working with Osborne & Little for five years. As he says, ‘We’ve now established a really good working relationship and with each collection we produce, we’re able to express a different mood and theme.’

Arriving in Deya purely by chance around two years ago, Matthew fell in love with the place. He now lives 80% of the time outside the village, in what he describes as ‘a lovely five-bedroom house with a gorgeous garden’ that he’s currently renovating. He loves the lifestyle here and it’s one of the places where he feels most creative.

Hence the gorgeous Deya Collection.

Recently, Matthew kindly found time in his busy schedule to tell me how the Deya Collection came to be.

A collection is born

I began by asking Matthew how a collection comes to be. ‘Designing wallpaper is for me a dream job so I’m lucky to get to do a new collection every year and it’s always really exciting,’ he tells me. ‘Each one starts with a mood or theme the team all agrees on that just feels right for the time and the brand. I start with a moodboard to help cement my ideas and then begins a long process of working on specific print designs, usually with a pencil and paints. The prints often get tidied up and adjusted on the computer. Osborne & Little use their in-depth knowledge and experience to bring them to life, making sure we have a good range of colours, scales and options within each collection.’

The idea for the Deya Collection came about some time ago. As Matthew lives in the village most of the year, ‘it just felt like a really natural step to work on a collection based on an area I love, where I could see inspiration all around me. I was particularly drawn to the plants and nature in the area and wanted to express that natural, rugged and understated beauty within some of the designs. The colours within the landscapes that surround the village – soft greens, blues, pinks and white – also inspired me. It’s a very natural collection.’

Graham Noakes, Sales and Marketing Director for Osborne & Little adds ‘From our point of view, the Deya Collection offers our customer a great variety of Mediterranean inspired possibilities for interior design, all touched with Matthew’s unique eye for colour and pattern.’

The perfect marriage of design sensibility and innovation

A variety of embroidery and print techniques were used to realise Matthew’s designs for the Deya Collection.

The sumptuously glamorous La Fuente embroidered design combines machine embroidery with hand crewel-work to create the different textures. Crewel, in case you didn’t know, is a thin, loosely twisted, worsted yarn used for tapestry and embroidery. For Dragonera, the dragonflies are depicted in jewel-colours, including a metallic thread, to give them an embellished look.

Many of the designs are digitally printed, including Formentera. Here, the butterflies that feature in the design are printed on a wide width, semi-sheer linen to allow for a large scale floaty and flowing design.

This is also true of the strikingly beautiful Deya Meadow wallpaper, designed as three separate 300cms panels. Matthew’s design sensibility and Osborne & Little’s innovative approach to technical challenges combine perfectly to create an uplifting panoramic effect.

‘The Deya Meadow wallpaper actually came from observing the wild flowers in my back garden throughout the year,’ Matthew says. ‘I’ve tried to capture that free flowing, whimsical and magical atmosphere the flowers create and just love the idea of wrapping a meadow around a room to transport you back to Deya.’

Looking ahead

For Matthew, the Deya Collection is an evolution. ‘It’s full of colour and pattern as usual but there’s a calmness to it,’ he says. ‘It feels a little more settled and timeless to me, which I like. I can’t wait to use some of the Deya designs in my own home. But who knows where I’ll head for inspiration next year. I’m working on ideas as we speak.’

The process of creating a collection for Osborne & Little usually takes a full year from start to finish. In the meantime, Matthew is launching his own luxury home fragrance collection. There are ten candles in the range and it probably comes as no surprise that one scent is named Summer Siesta and is also inspired by Deya. With notes of oranges, lemons and jasmine flower, it is, as Matthew says, ‘another wonderful connection to the place I love.’
