Yoga in Mallorca – welcome to yoga islandOctober 5, 2018

One of the great things for me about the cooler mornings and evenings of autumn on the island is that it’s great weather for yoga in Mallorca.

Right now, Mallorca is yoga island. There are so many great teachers offering all kinds of yoga at friendly, welcoming, ultra-professional studios that us yogis and yoginis are spoilt for choice. People coming into the practice also couldn’t have a better place to dive into yoga.

The view from Louise’s studio

Yoga in Deià

Louise Fletcher-Loni of Mountain Wellness will be offering yoga five days a week at her charming studio in Casa Rullán throughout the winter.

There will be classes at 8am on Monday and Friday and 10am Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. In mid-January 2019, Louise will be offering beginners yoga. She’ll also be starting a monthly meditation group in January.

Louise’s studio has the added bonus of gorgeous views to help inspire you and an excellent café downstairs to relax in after your practice.

Mountain Wellness will be closed between 20 December and 20 January. Follow Louise Loni on Facebook or Instagram and go here for more information.

Yoga in Mallorca: find your yoga tribe in Palma

Whenever I’m travelling, I love to try out new studios. They’re always slightly different from what I’m used to, and practicing gives me an added insight to wherever I’m visiting. Not to mention the opportunity to talk yoga with new friends.

If you’re based in Palma or spending time in the city on a short break and would like to practice in a studio rather than on a bedroom floor, there are a couple of great options with which I’m very familiar.

Earth Yoga and Zunray are in central Palma and easy to find. They’re beautiful studios in which to practice yoga in Mallorca and easily the equal of anywhere in the world. Classes are in English and, if you’re feeling adventurous, also Spanish.

Palma’s vibrant, international yoga community tends to float from one studio to another, mixing and matching classes.

Coming to Earth

For Sandra at Earth, autumn is a wonderful time. “Our regular students return,” she says, “and I love seeing all the familiar faces. Now that it’s cooler and the light is changing, there’s the sense that we can drop into the practice a little easier.”

Deep in the practice

Apart from a wide choice of classes in English and Spanish at its Santa Catalina and Portals studios, Earth is offering an intriguing choice of workshops in the coming months.

On 13 October there will be an essential oils workshop with Armindah, originally from the Caribbean island of Aruba, which sounds like it should be an essential oil. Sandra is a convert to the power of essential oils for boosting immune systems and raising energy levels and a wide selection is on offer at Earth.

Yogi Christian Klick will be offering his Flight Club workshop, focusing on arm balances, and Secret Paths, Pranayama, Bandha & Kriya Essentials for those of you who really want to go deeper into yoga.

Earlier this year, Earth lost a much-loved member of its community, Emily Larkin, and there will be a class in her honour to raise funds for an appropriate cause.

This Saturday, 6 October, Earth’s Art of Stillness morning meditation returns to the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca in San Augustin. I absolutely recommend you try this. It’s a perfect way to begin the weekend and a great excuse to visit the Miro museum, tucked away in sleepy San Augustin but very easy to get to. Art of Stillness happens on the first Saturday of every month.

Three yogini graces

Earth has been nurturing yogis and yoginis in Palma for around 10 years. I wondered how the studio is being affected by the global surge in yoga’s popularity. “We see more people coming through the door, for sure,” Sandra says. “Which is great, because we now have the space to offer larger classes to around 25 to 30 people.”

And how does Sandra see her role in the Mallorca yoga community? “For newcomers, it’s all about helping them find the right yoga routine. It’s also about introducing people to the idea that practicing is not about being in a yoga bubble. We can all be more yogic and caring in daily life. I’m a great admirer of Seane Corn, who combines yoga, outreach and activism beautifully.”

A warm vibe at Zunray

Francesca at Zunray also looks forward to autumn. “It’s an active period at Zunray. New and old yogis are back from their summer break and eager to get back on the mat or begin a new practice. There’s a very special vibe that’s created by a wonderful, international group of students practicing together.”

Welcome to Zunray

Zunray now offers a fabulous selection of options for practicing yoga in Mallorca. There are classes from 7 am to 8.30 pm seven days a week that range from Kundalini yoga to Yin – my two favourite styles. There’s also a very special Advanced 2 ½ hour practice, meditation and philosophy class.

From now until the end of October, Zunray offers you the opportunity to practice on the beach – one of the real pleasures of yoga in Mallorca. Classes are at the Illetes Balneario Beach Club on Saturday mornings between 9.30 and 10.30 am. This is also the perfect time for a swim – the sea’s still warm but it’s crystal clear and energizing.

Zunray also offers special events and teacher training, which you can find out about at their website.

For Francesca, Zunray is a “school in constant evolution, driven by curiosity about all the good things related to body awareness and well-being. We love introducing our students to great local and international teachers who share traditional yoga awareness as well as new body alignment techniques like Bowspring. Outside the studio, we offer fun Kula events like outdoor dinners throughout the year. It’s all about expanding, learning and just being.”

Bowspring at Zunray

Zunray is working on creating a yoga house near the studio to offer lodging to travellers who want to do yoga on holiday but would also like to spend time on the mat with other yogis. Francesca hopes that this will also be a place for city yoga retreats and trainings.

What a fantastic idea!

Earth and Zunray are two studios I know best. There are others in which to practice yoga in Mallorca which may well be great. I’ll be writing regularly about yoga in Mallorca on this blog. So, if you have a yoga studio or offer retreats, do please get in touch with me and we can talk.

Our next yogic post will be about the fabulous Sea Yogi yoga boutique in Palma. Keep watching this space. Namaste.
