Our Story

While exchanging emails with the great rock and roll photographer Brad Elterman, we discovered he’d become intrigued by Deia after reading about Kevin Ayers. Brad met and photographed Kevin back in 1977 at a party for his friend Harvey Kubernik, then the Los Angeles correspondent for UK music weekly Melody Maker.

Brad very kindly allowed us to share these photos of Kevin relaxing in Los Angeles. As readers of this blog will know, Kevin lived in Deia off and on from the 1960s to the 1990s and was a much-cherished friend and inspiration to many in the village.

The photos were published in the Japanese magazine Music Life, which explains the writing on the group photo.

Kevin and Kim

In one of the photos, Kevin is pictured with sleazy but brilliant Hollywood rock and roll legend Kim Fowley. Fowley produced the first ever Soft Machine single Feelin’ Reelin’ Squealin’ in 1966. He would go on to become the controversial producer of The Runaways, the all-girl band that first gave the world Joan Jett.

Our resident rock and roll expert spotted what looks like a young Roger Taylor, Queen’s drummer, in one of the photos. He also identified DJ and scenester Rodney Bingenheimer and British rocker Al ‘Year of The Cat’ Stewart, and thinks that the guy in the pinstripe suit Rodney’s looking at adoringly might be Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson.

If anyone can identify any of the other people in the photo, please let us know.

About Brad Elterman

Spot the Al Stewart

Brad Elterman began his long, illustrious career in rock and roll photography when, aged 16, he borrowed a camera to photograph his hero Bob Dylan on stage. (Incidentally, Dylan has an intriguing Deia connection.) He went on to photograph just about any legendary rocker you care to mention, including Bowie, members of The Who, KISS, Queen, The Ramones, Blondie, Sex Pistols and, as they say, many more. His work has appeared in publications such as Rolling Stone and The New York Post and, more recently, Interview magazine DE, White Lies, Purple Fashion as well as on Vice.Com.

BTW, Brad asked us to tell you he’s looking forward to being in Deia in April.
