Mountain Radio: on air in Deia very soonNovember 26, 2015

Mountain Radio, which goes live very soon, will offer listeners a mix of music, wellness, inspiration and celebration of the unique culture of Deia and the north-west coast of Mallorca. The brand new online station is the brainchild of radio-lover Hayley Newbury, who arrived in the village in April 2015.

How Hayley came to Deia

After Hayley and her husband Danny finished filming on the island for the British ITV travel show Wish You Were in 2003 they stayed at the Resi. As she says, “We explored the village and fell in love straight away. It just seemed to feel right being in Deia and the scenery is breathtaking. Every year we returned as many times as we could for weekend breaks and holidays and in 2009 we got married in the church. Now we live here with our two boys. It’s a wonderful place to bring up children.”

When Hayley’s not being mum, she and Danny run invitation-only business Deia VIP, helping people run their busy lives and businesses. But she’s still finding time to follow her dream.

Ga Ga for radio

As a teenager, Hayley worked at a popular commercial radio station and, as she says, “fell in love with radio”. She then moved to get a job at another commercial station, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

Hayley’s background in music is also highly useful. She worked at Grammy-award winning Parr Street Studios in Liverpool (think Coldplay, Diana Ross, Simply Red and Snow Patrol). After organising a star-studded charity concert at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Concert Hall in 2005 which was a runaway success, Hayley and Danny moved into music management, working with A-listers including Sir Tom Jones and Daniel Bedingfield.

The sound of Mountain Radio

Although it’s still early days for Mountain Radio, Hayley’s been busy putting together an exciting schedule. “We’ll offer a mix of great music for all tastes, including Soul on Sunday. There’ll be plenty of focus on wellness. Spa@Home Mallorca will offer health tips, news and music. Café Cody, the popular online radio station run by Robin Johnson who’s well-loved in Deia, will share inspirational talks and interviews every night. Every Friday, Shirley from Soller Web will tell us what’s on in Deia and Soller. And you’re also doing something, David. Yes?’

That’s right, I’ll be offering a half-hour mix of meditations on Deia’s unique cultural heritage and influence as well as selection of music with a connection to the village. I’m really looking forward to it.

Serving Deia

Hayley’s vision is for “both the Deia community, and those who live the village but live somewhere else to be able to talk about the things they love about the place, promote events and ultimately help keep the village healthy and vibrant”.

If you’d like to get involved with Mountain Radio, Hayley would love to hear from you.
